The Fashion Awards Maryland has nominated the Little White Fashion Truck (LWFT) as one of five finalists in the Emerging Boutique category. According to the truck’s Facebook page, the winner is determined by people’s choice and voting began Monday.

Area residents have become familiar with the truck, created by Severna Park native Shelley Sarmiento, as it is often spotted around town. The truck first emerged in Severna Park in July 2012.

Sarmiento would like to do more than just be nominated for the Emerging Boutique award. She wants to win but she needs some help. You can vote by logging onto the Fashion Awards MD website and casting your vote.

“LWFT is a huge success and has received both local and national recognition thanks to your kindness and support,” Sarmiento wrote on the truck’s Facebook page. “Winning this prestigious award would be one more super cool step toward sharing our LWFT Innovation and Truck Culture with so many others.”

The opening presentation from Jim O’Neill of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, showed that such optimism is not without reason. He carefully laid out evidence to show that the global economic outlook is not as dire as most believe.

Mr O’Neill, who coined the term BRIC in reference to the world’s fastest growing economies, clarified the business imperative of becoming involved in those markets. He also defined a global economic rebalancing of power between the US “which used to consume too much and produced to little,” and China “which used to consume too little and produce too much.” Analysing data on national retail sales and consumer spending shows that we are moving towards an equilibrium says O’Neill.

Glossing over concern in some quarters that China’s growth is slowing, O’Neill stated some stunning facts about its continued expansion – between 2010 and 2012 China’s growth equalled the entire value of India’s economy, worth over $4 trillion.

Countering naysayers who moan that the UK still exports more to Ireland than it does to the lucrative BRIC markets, Mr O’Neill stated that “this is no longer true”. Canny firms are changing the balance and O’Neill revealed that UK exports to the eurozone have in fact declined by 10% since 2000. In the meantime, UK exports to the BRICs have grown to account for 8% of what Britain sends overseas and Goldman Sachs’ guru says this should reach 17% by the end of the decade.

The message to those with a thirst for growth was this – grab your competitive advantage while you can.

An interview with Siemens UK CEO Roland Aurich at the conference touched on the now traditional comparison of UK SMEs with the more mature German Mittelstadt, characterised by professional management despite often being family owned. By comparison, later comments from an expert panel of industry leaders and finance professionals linked family management in the UK with a ‘lifestyle’ approach to business which often dulled aspirations for expansion.

This linked to debate on access to finance. A divide became apparent between those with anecdotal evidence of being turned down for the funding they needed in order to invest and expand, and bank representatives who insisted that they were willing to lend to good business propositions but were experiencing little demand.
What is it we love about the Mittelstadt?
Mark Ridgway, president, the Manufacturing Technologies Association: “I strongly believe that the internationalisation of SMEs is essential in achieving UK growth. But the conference exposed a confused view of SME ambition and competency. We heard family run businesses described as the backbone of the German manufacturing sector with stable long term strategies, but similar ownership in the UK being associated with ‘lifestyle’ operations. It also became clear that understanding of supply chains and the potential position of SMEs within them is weak in some quarters. The possibility of an SME being a capital equipment ‘prime’ was ignored in the supply chain workshop.”

Craig Naylor, managing director, NTR: “It was great to hear [the shadow Chancellor] say that they are working on a system to reduce the influence of party-political interests in policy making. But at the same time he admitted that political point scoring is getting worse! We can only hope that the aggravation of effecting change is making things worse before they get better. I only know that businesses are tired of the rhetoric. I’m more interested now in seeing what we can do independently as an industry – with customers, suppliers and academia – to create confidence.”

Let the macro message get you moving

Chris Tompson, CEO, Xpresss Group: “I’ve been made aware that we must accelerate our investment plans. Jim O’Neill made it clear that, for wider industry and individual companies, the opportunities are in the BRIC economies – for Xpress the focus is Brazil. But his startling statistics on the rate of growth in the BRICs and how quickly those markets are developing show that we must move faster to gain a meaningful competitive position. We’re doing the right things strategically, but we must do them quicker.

Chris Sullivan, chief executive of the UK Corporate Banking Division at Royal Bank of Scotland stated that the bank “is holding £55bn in SME current account deposits.” He held this up as proof that most companies are not looking for debt and are cautious about re-investing their reserves in an uncertain climate.

In such a context, Heseltine argued, it becomes ever more important to effectively stimulate competitive spirit. He is confident that his plan to deliver regional business funding, won in competition between 39 local enterprise partnerships, is an effective way of doing this, if coupled with better capability in the nationwide network of the British Chambers of Commerce and sector trade bodies. The UK compares unfavourably with European peers when it comes to the clout and strategic alignment of these networks.

Heseltine’s plan for growth is driven by a belief that the UK must raise its average business performance. “It is easy to find examples of excellence in Britain,” he said. “But the global economy will judge us on our average.”

Negativity ill received

The positivity of Jim O’Neill and Lord Heseltine was well received by most delegates in stark contrast to the negative campaigning of shadow Chancellor Ed Balls. While delegates welcomed news that Sir John Armitt has been tasked with finding ways to reduce the impact of party political interests in long term policy making, most were doubtful that any real difference could be made to such an embedded aspect of British politics.

It was also observed that, while Mr Balls preached long termism and identified the need for an industrial strategy, he failed to acknowledge or respond to the strategy issued by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills last September. He also sidestepped a request from one delegate that Labour should adopt EEF’s industrial strategy, Route to Growth published in November.

The marketplace was founded by Rie Yano and Jie Zheng, who met while in grad school at Harvard. Both had worked in the fashion industry themselves – Yano in digital media marketing at Coach, and Zheng at Ralph Lauren and J Crew.

As the company name hints, the site plans to go after an international audience. And Yano tells us that currently, some 30 percent of the service’s traffic comes from outside the U.S., despite the Material Wrld’s still heavy New York focus.

“We’re aggressive about entering new markets,” explains Yano, “because at the end of the day, a marketplace is only exciting when it’s international. More than half of eBay sales are done internationally,” she adds. “From the beginning, our business model has been about allowing people to discover and purchase from anywhere in the world.”

The service is going after the high-end fashion consumer, allowing them to photograph and share the items in their closet, and then sell those items to other users in a peer-to-peer marketplace setting. It’s a concept that’s been tried before from startups like Poshmark, Threadflip, Twice, and even kids’ clothes marketplace like ThredUp. But Yano notes that Material Wrld isn’t going after “fast fashion,” as she calls it; it’s very brand and quality conscious. Price points for clothes on sites like Poshmark tend to fall in the $20 to $30 range, she remarks, while on Material Wrld, it’s much higher.

“We’re not disclosing our sales figures yet, but our average order price is around $100,” Yano says. “And we’re actually focused on bringing that average order price up. We’re differentiating ourselves from the rest of the resale space, which is much more like ‘thrifting’ than ‘luxury consigning,’”

With today’s official debut, the site is offering its early adopters half a dozen new features, including real-time notifications of site activity, in a style similar to what you would see on Facebook, a personalized “live feed” of the closets and groups you’re following, also reminiscent of Facebook’s News Feed, and more.

Some of Yamamoto’s latest creations will be sold in a pop-up shop at Isetan’s newly remodeled Shinjuku flagship from April 3 through 9. The 69-year-old designer said that from now on, he plans to do more of his elaborate music and performance shows in Europe, Asia and the U.S.

The E! Entertainment network said Tuesday it had reached a deal with its most bankable franchise to make three more seasons of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Terms were not disclosed.

The sixth season of the show averaged 3 million viewers on Sunday nights, the cable networks’ top series. Five of the 10 most-watched shows in the network’s history, in fact, involved the Kardashians. The 18-episode seventh season begins on May 20.

E! said the entire family is covered by the deal: Kim, Kourtney and Rob Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian Odom, and Bruce, Kris, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. E! will continue to have the first crack at any spinoff projects.

E! has turned the Kardashians into a mini-empire, with spinoff series like “Kourtney and Kim Take New York” and “Khloe and Lamar.” Although E! retains the first right to these spinoffs, Tuesday’s deal does not specify how many more will be made.

The network would also not say whether musician Kanye West would be included in the series. West and Kim Kardashian have been seen together lately amid reports that they are a new couple.

Kim’s elaborate wedding — and brief marriage to — basketball player Kris Humphries was a highlight of E!’s programming last fall. The network had to put out a statement denying rumors that the wedding was orchestrated for TV.

A Spanish dating association is trying to slow a population drain from the country’s central villages by introducing bachelors to women bussed in from Madrid.
Candeleda, a village of 6,000 on the banks of the Lobera river, hosted a weekend fiesta to welcome 68 women for a meet-and-greet with the its single men.
Cave paintings show Candeleda has been inhabited for 5,000 years, and one current resident, Jose Miguel, 67, said he would hate to see its population dwindle after such a long history.

“I’ve checked out the few widows and single women here,” he said. “I signed up for this to meet new ladies and to hopefully show them the beauty of my town.”
The group, Asocamu, was set up in 1995 to promote rural repopulation by organising parties for single men and woman. Up to 100 of Spain’s 5,000 villages are under imminent threat of abandonment. Manuel Gozalo, one of the organisers, said Spain’s painful financial crisis and the lure of city jobs had made the need more pressing than ever.
Asocamu credits as its inspiration the 1951 film Westward the Women, starring Robert Taylor and Denise Darcel, which tells the story of how the American west was populated by organising wagon trains of women to provide company – and brides – for lonely pioneers.

Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft is apparently dating Marilyn Manson’s ex-wife Dita Von Teese.

The singer was spotted canoodling with Von Teese at this weekend’s Coachella and was also pictured being driven away from the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles with Von Teese and Kelly Osborne.
Von Teese, whose real name is Heather Sweet, is widely considered to be the world’s number one burlesque dancer.
She was married to Manson from 2004 to 2006 and is a full 14 years older than the singer. However, judging by the photo you can see at the top of your screen, that doesn’t seem to have put Hutchcraft off.
Hutchcraft has been a fixture of tabloid gossip columns for the last two years. He has previously dated Marina And The Diamonds’ Marina Diamandis and was also linked to Alexa Chung, former girlfriend of Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and German supermodel Shermine Shahrivar.
Hurts are currently working on the follow-up to their debut studio album ‘Happiness’. They play Hungary’s Sziget festival later this summer.

Dubai: A Ukrainian woman yesterday lost her petition for early release from jail, where she has been serving a life sentence for premeditatedly murdering a prostitute in 1996.
The Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday rejected the 43-year-old petitioner Tatiana A.Y’s request for early release from jail based on good behaviour after 15 years in jail.
The petitioner was 28 years old at the time when she and a man killed the 27-year-old Uzbek prostitute, J.K, and robbed her money from her flat in Al Rifaa in 1996.
“The court refused the petitioner’s plea for an early release,” said the presiding judge. The reasons for the rejection were not revealed.
The petitioner appeared in pink prison attire with head scarf before the bench of four judges when she heard the decision in courtroom four. Her accomplice, Y.V, was sentenced to death in 1998 and remains at large. Records did not identify his age or nationality.
Dubai prosecutors said Y.V and the petitioner premeditatedly murdered J.K when they jointly bludgeoned her skull with an iron lever and stole her money and jewellery.

Serena Williams defeated Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday to send the United States back into the Fed Cup World Group by clinching a series victory over Ukraine.

Williams’ win gave the U.S. an unassailable 3-0 lead. Christina McHale later won 7-5, 6-3 against 17-year-old Ukrainian Elina Svitolina to secure a sweep of the singles matches. Americans Liezel Huber and Sloane Stephens completed a 5-0 rout with a 6-4, 6-1 win over 19-year-old twins Lyudmyla and Nadiya Kichenok in doubles.Williams was making her first Fed Cup appearance on foreign soil in more than a decade to become eligible for the U.S. team at the London Olympics.

ELEVEN Mavericks Revue Bar exotic dancers are free to get on to the stage again after the State dropped criminal charges against them.
The women, from Ukraine, Columbia, Moldova, Thailand and Romania, appeared one by one in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The trial into the allegations they contravened the Immigrations Act was expected to begin yesterday, but the State made an about-turn and withdrew the charges.
Prosecutors claimed the women violated the conditions of their temporary residents’ permits.
The women, aged between 23 and 33, were either not entitled to work because they didn’t have work permits or because they said they would work at other places. Immigration services and the police raided the club in October and seized records relating to the dancers’ work and residents’ permits.
But it was found that the State did not have a strong enough case against the women to secure a conviction, their lawyer, George de Beer, said outside court yesterday.
Two of the remaining women are due to appear in the Cape Town Regional Court today.
After court, one of the dancers, Katya Fedkina, said her arrest was an “unpleasant” experience, but she was glad the ordeal was over.
Fedkina, who has been in SA for six years, worked at other clubs before and was enrolled to work at Mavericks, but did not because she was arrested.
Mavericks owner, Shane Harrison, said the club was targeted because one Home Affairs official had a personal agenda against the club.
“We’re trying to contact senior officials at Home Affairs to find out what the problem is. We’ve always tried to work within the framework of the law. We are trying to establish a working relationship with Home Affairs.”

The trial of the man charged with murdering three of Jennifer Hudson’s family members resumed Tuesday with the Oscar-winner shutting her eyes as a police officer described finding her dead family members.

Hudson sat next to her fiancé as prosecutors shifted their focus to presenting crime scene evidence in the case against her former brother-in-law, William Balfour.

Hudson hung her head and shut her eyes as Chicago police Sgt. David Dowling described finding her mother’s body sprawled in the living room with gunshot wounds through her back.

Hudson didn’t move as Dowling described finding her brother dead in his bed of a gunshot wound to the head. His sheets were pulled up as if he had been sleeping.

Balfour was estranged from his wife, Hudson’s sister, at the time of the killings. He has pleaded not guilty to murdering Hudson’s mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.

Hudson, wearing a black top and green skirt, sat in a fourth row bench well within view of jurors Tuesday. Her sister and Balfour’s ex-wife, Julia Hudson, sat on her left.

Another officer testified about the frantic search for Hudson’s nephew, who was found in an SUV three days later. Prosecutors also played a surveillance video showing Balfour getting out of a car at a gas station near the Hudson house on Chicago’s South Side before the killings. Prosecutors are trying to show he was in the area at the time — something Balfour has denied.

As the video played on a courtroom screen, Jennifer Hudson rested her head on her knees for several minutes.

Prosecutors created a buzz Monday by calling the Oscar winner and “American Idol” finalist as their first witness, but on Tuesday they began getting down to the nitty-gritty of their case.

With no surviving witnesses to the murders, prosecutors must offer overwhelming circumstantial evidence that Balfour committed the grisly crime on Oct. 24, 2008.

One challenge will be tying Balfour to the alleged murder weapon, a silver and black .45-calibre handgun that sat Monday on a stack of papers at the prosecution table in plain view of jurors and Jennifer Hudson.

But prosecutors claim Balfour targeted the family in a horrific act of vindictiveness against his ex-wife. They believe he became enraged by balloons he saw at the home that he thought were from her new boyfriend.

Prosecutors contend Balfour went inside the three-story house around 9 a.m. and shot Hudson’s mother, 57-year-old Darnell Donerson, in the living room, then shot her 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson, twice in the head as he lay in bed.

Investigators allege he then drove off in Jason Hudson’s sport utility vehicle with Julia Hudson’s 7-year-old son, Julian King, inside, and later shot the boy in the head as he lay behind a front seat.

Shortly after Thompson and prosecutors laid out their cases, Jennifer Hudson took the witness stand in sometimes tearful, gut-wrenching testimony. Hudson, who was in Florida at the time of the shootings, spoke of her family and her reaction to her sister, Julia Hudson, telling her in 2006 that she was marrying Balfour.

“None of us wanted her to marry him,” the 30-year-old said, her voice cracking as she struggled to hold back tears.

Later, Julia Hudson described how Balfour repeatedly threatened her and her family after she rejected his pleas in May 2008.

If convicted of at least two of the murder counts, Balfour would face a mandatory life sentence.

It’s hard to believe that the young star who brought to life comedienne Fannie Brice in the stage and film versions of “Funny Girl” is now 70 years old. In honor of Barbra Streisand’s milestone birthday today, we present you with five facts about the iconic singer, actress, writer, producer, and director, who grew up living in a Brooklyn housing project and went on to become Hollywood royalty.

1. She Loves Her Bumpy Nose. Streisand has said she that early in her career she was encouraged to undergo rhinoplasty to get a perfect, movie star nose, but she declined. “I was afraid of the pain,” she told Oprah Winfrey. “And how could I trust a doctor’s aesthetic sense? How would I know he wouldn’t take too much off?” And if she hadn’t been afraid, it still would have been a no-go. “From certain angles, I liked my nose — still do. Some people would tell me, ‘You could take the bump off.’ And I would say, ‘But I like the bump.’”

2. She Lost an “A.” The star, who was born with the given name Barbara Joan Streisand, was also encouraged to change her name to make it more marquee friendly. While she opted not to do that either, she did make one small modification to it. “People told me to change my last name,” she also told Winfrey. “But I thought, That’s not real. So instead, I decided to take an ‘a’ out of my first name and shorten it to Barbra. I did that when I was 18.”

Streisand is the only artist ever to receive Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe, National Medal of Arts and Peabody Awards. Then there’s France’s Legion d’Honneur, the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award — oh, and she was the first female film director to receive the Kennedy Center Honors. The icon won the Best Actress Oscar for “Funny Girl” and picked up the other for Best Original Song for “Evergreen.” As far as her music, the “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” singer’s works have been nominated for over 57 Grammy Awards. She won 15, including two special awards. And she has over 50 gold records.
4. She Is Diane Lane’s Stepmother-In-Law. Streisand has been married twice. Her first husband was actor Elliott Gould, with whom she had a son, Jason. In 1998, she married her second husband, actor James Brolin. She became stepmother to his two children, including actor Josh Brolin. When Josh married actress Diane Lane in 2004, Streisand became Lane’s step-mother-in-law. “[She] is an amazing woman,” Lane told Redbook. “I especially admire her gift for listening to people. If you go out for dinner with her, she’ll interview everyone in the restaurant.”

5. She Will Soon Appear on the Big Screen with … Seth Rogen. Streisand has worked with Hollywood legends from Robert Redford to Robert De Niro, but she has an interesting co-star in her next project: Seth Rogen! After showing off her comedy chops in the “Meet the Fockers” movies, she’ll again be going for laughs in the upcoming comedy “The Guilt Trip,” in which she plays Rogen’s mom.

Whether you’re Team Peeta or Team Gale, one thing is for sure: “The Hunger Games” has boosted the profiles of both Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. But while Hemsworth, who plays Gale in film, can’t benefit from all the female attention he’s now getting (He’s been dating Miley Cyrus since 2009), single Hutcherson could … but he’s not. “You know it’s been a little crazy right now,” the 19-year-old, who was linked to Vanessa Hudgens last year, told omg! at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. “I haven’t been out in the dating world all that much. It couldn’t hurt I don’t think, so that’s good.”

Over the weekend, Hutcherson became the youngest person to be honored with GLAAD’s Vanguard Award for his work with Straight But Not Narrow, an LGBT ally organization he helped create. The accolade, which has also gone to Elizabeth Taylor and Charlize Theron, was “so important” to the young actor because he has two gay uncles who died of AIDS. “They literally passed away as I was being born unfortunately, so I never got a chance to meet them,” adds Hutcherson. “They were such a huge influence on my mom’s life, and my mom is such a huge influence in my life, so they’re a big influence to me. It means a lot to take this award home and know it’s in their honor and for everybody else who has lost somebody to AIDS or any other kind of disease.”

Before the teen even made his way to the stage on Saturday night to accept his award — which was presented by actor Benicio del Toro — he was already receiving a standing ovation. “I can honestly say I’ve never been more proud in my life,” Hutcherson began his speech. He then talked about his two uncles, a topic which clearly choked up the young actor, who played the son of two lesbians in “The Kids Are All Right,” starring Annette Benning and Julianne Moore. “I’m so sick of saying the words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian,’” he continued. “We’re just people. One day I want my son to come home from school and say ‘I found this guy and I love him’ and I’ll say, ‘Yes you do and that’s OK.’” After giving a shout-out to the people who helped him form Straight But Not Narrow, Hutcherson concluded, “I’ll make hopefully a million more movies, but this is what I want to do with my life: just changing the world and changing the way people think.”

”My brief this year was to make it a bit raunchier,” says the show’s Scottish-born executive producer, Marty Benson (I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!, This is David Gest). ”The executive producer last year said to me that they had just serial internet daters coming to the casting. This year we’ve had people who just love the show, who just think it would be good fun to be on it, which is great.”

This series, the final dates have been stepped up a notch, with elaborate sets adding to the spectacle – for viewers, at least. The first final date had a Roman theme, with contestants dressed in togas, sharing a bath and feeding each other grapes.

Such activities play to the show’s twentysomething demographic, Benson says. ”It’s for normal people in their 20s who are single and up for a bit of a laugh,” he says.

Contestants would want to be able to laugh off the experience, particularly if their dates don’t like what they see in the ”light reveal” at the show’s end. It might sound cruel but Benson says contestants know what they’re getting into.

”When we went on the casting tour, we were very honest. We said, ‘It’s very likely that you’ll come on this show, you’ll probably kiss someone and they might think you’re ugly and walk away from you.’ And we say, ‘Are you prepared for that?’ They say, ‘Yes.’ We say, ‘Are you sure?’ They say, ‘Yes.”’

There’s hope yet for the rejected, however. After the first series, love blossomed between two contestants from different episodes who met on the show’s Facebook page.

Rosie O’Donnell says Lindsay Lohan is not ready to tackle Elizabeth Taylor in that upcoming Lifetime movie.
Tuesday morning Rosie joined Star Jones and Donny Deutsch on “Today”‘s professionals panel to weigh in on a variety of topics. When asked about Lohan, Deutsch defended the decision to cast the troubled star in the film. But Rosie was adamant about it being a bad move.

If there’s a mutual like–meaning that both users liked each other’s profiles–you’re both sent a text message through a private line that allows you to talk to each other for up to seven days without exchanging contact information. Through that line, you can either plan a date or exchange numbers to plan one for the future.

Users who get a mutual like also receive an email in their inbox with a deal for a local business–something like a complimentary cheese plate or prosecco at a New York restaurant–to incentivize actually going on the date.

Ms. Kang told Betabeat that she arrived at this online dating model by looking at what customers wanted, and examining what other dating sites were lacking.

“Coffee Meets Bagel was really born while we were brainstorming about how do we actually make online dating compelling for people to really get excited about it, and not just something that people would choose to do as a last ditch effort,” she told Betabeat by phone. “After graduation it’s harder and harder to meet people, and a lot of people resort to online dating–but there’s still a stigma. We wanted to create a company and a brand that’s exciting and that people can look forward to interacting with.”

Valeria Lukyanova is gaining national attention with photos of her posted on her Facebook page featuring a wide-eyed, nearly fake-looking woman wearing risqué outfits that closely resemble the iconic doll.

Many people are not buying her claims to be a real-life Barbie doll.  Many of them believe she has either undergone plastic surgery or uses Photoshop to carve out her tiny waist.

On her blog, Lukyanova says she is the most famous woman on the Russian Internet because of her doll-like looks.

She has hundreds of photos posted to her Facebook page that feature her looking eerily similar to a Barbie doll, with almost a mask-type appearance, disproportionately large breasts and wide, icy-blue eyes.

Channel 9 attempted to contact Lukyanova on her Facebook page for comment, but has not heard back from her.

Diane Levin, professor of education at Wheelock College in Boston, told ABC News the mystery of her existence is not the issue. The problem is that her flaunted image epitomizes and exemplifies the issue of objectification of women in today’s society.
